The Berks History Center along with the Berks Women’s History Alliance invites you to celebrate the decades-long journey of women demanding and working for the right to vote in a celebratory weekend trip to Seneca Falls, NY. Travel to Harriet Tubman’s home in Auburn, NY followed by dinner Friday evening in Belhurst Castle. Completed in 1889, Belhurst Castle in Geneva, NY, sits on the original site of a Seneca Indian village and home to the Council of the Six Nations of Iroquois. Under the direction of Mrs. Carrie Young Hannon Collins, the four-story castle took almost five years to complete.
Saturday will be spent in Seneca Falls, NY, site of the first women’s rights convention in 1848 and the birthplace of the American Women’s Rights Movement. The National Women’s Hall of Fame was created in 1969, and it is the nation’s oldest membership organization dedicated to recognizing and celebrating achievements of great American women. The Elizabeth Cady Stanton House museum honors this leading figure of the early women’s rights movement as well as her work as an American suffragist, social activist and abolitionist. Later, our visit to the Women’s Rights National Historic Park highlights women’s contributions and accomplishments that have been overlooked and consequently omitted from mainstream culture. At this museum, women’s history isn’t meant to rewrite history; the objective is to promote scholarship and expand knowledge of American history.
