*CANCELED* PA German Tour with Lisa Minardi

December 8, 2020 @ 8:00 am - 6:00 pm

This bus trip was originally scheduled on March 29th and has been rescheduled to December 8, 2020 due to the concerns with COVID-19. Please contact Vicky Heffner at 610-375-4375 for any rescheduling conflicts or additional concerns.

Explore PA German folk art at Trappe’s new Center for PA German Studies and enjoy tours of the Henry Muhlenburg House, Dewees Tavern, Speaker’s House, and Daniel Hiester House. Includes lunch at Grace’s Café.

Join us for a day-long immersion in Pennsylvania German art and culture, beginning with a behind-the-scenes tour of the new Center for Pennsylvania German Studies in Trappe. Located in the historic Dewees Tavern, the Center has five exhibition galleries along with a fraktur/textiles study, research library, and archives. Our tour includes an exclusive preview of the special exhibition from Hubener to Medinger: Redware Potters of Montgomery County, before it opens to the public. We will also tour the Henry Muhlenberg House, a fully restored and furnished historic house museum, and the Speaker’s House, where the heirloom garden will be in full bloom and the restoration of the kitchen wing well underway. After our tour of Trappe, we will board the bus for a short ride north along the Perkiomen Creek to Sumneytown, where we will tour the Daniel Hiester House. Built in 1757, the house retains an extraordinary degree of its original Germanic details including built-in schranks, iron hardware, and much more. It is being painstakingly restored by private owners to its original condition.

Our guide for this trip is Lisa Minardi, executive director of Historic Trappe—a new non-profit organization that operates The Speaker’s House, Henry Muhlenberg House, and Center for Pennsylvania German Studies. She is the author of many books and articles including A Colorful Folk: Pennsylvania Germans & the Art of Everyday Life.

Lunch is at Grace’s Café with a choice of Granny Smith Chicken Salad, Salmon BLT, or the Trappe Burger. Elite Coach will provide transportation; price does not include driver gratuity.

Bus departs the Shillington Shopping Center parking lot BEHIND the PA Driver’s License Photo Center at 8:00 am and will return at approximately 6 pm.

$110 Members/$120 Non-Members
