At the beginning of the Revolutionary War, Pennsylvania’s ironworks produced a large percentage of Colonial America’s iron. The battles of Lexington and Concord were fought in the summer of 1775, and shortly thereafter Pennsylvania began to take measures for the defense of the state. The first line of defense was directed toward arming merchant ships already afloat, with cannon. While the proposal was good in theory, there were no cannon with which to arm them. The solution was provided by Pennsylvania’s ironmasters. Within a year, they were producing cannon to arm the American army and navy. Learn about the trials and tribulations they went through to arm Washington’s army. It’s a fascinating story and one worth retelling.
