SUMMARY:PA Dutch Classes
DESCRIPTION:Kannscht du Deitsch schwetze? \nBradley Smith\, Archivist at the Berks History Center\, will present an eight-week course that introduces participants to the language and culture of the Pennsylvania Dutch.   This beginner course will provide participants with instruction related to pronunciation\, vocabulary\, and common phrases\, and lead discussions related to Pennsylvania Dutch culture and history. Supplies are included. Just bring a pen and paper. \nDue to overwhelming demand\, we will be offering multiple day and evening courses\, beginning the week of September 20\, 2022\, and concluding by November 12th.  Each class will be 90 minutes in length and will be held at the Berks History Center\, located at 940 Centre Avenue\, Reading\, Pennsylvania.   For those not able to attend in-person classes\, the Berks History Center will also offer online classes in subsequent sessions\, beginning in January 2023.   \nRegistration and pre-payment are required. Once you sign up\, this will be your designated class day and time for the 8-week session. Any changes will need to be approved. The cost is $50 for BHC members (Individual Level Members and above) and $120 for non-members.  \nTo register: \n1.) Choose your class. SUMMARY:Taste of Taxation: The Whiskey Rebellion
DESCRIPTION:*This program will be held at the Pennsylvania Military Museum\, 51 Boal Avenue\, Boalsburg\, PA\,16827 \nA protest of the taxation of distilled spirts\, with the goal of raising revenue to pay down the war-debt from the Revolutionary War\, resulted in the calling-up of troops to suppress a violent uprising. Join historian Mr. Bradley Smith\, Archivist and Assistant Director at the Berks History Center in Reading\, PA\, for a talk about the history of distilled spirits in the Commonwealth at 1:00pm\, followed by a spirit tasting session hosted by Big Spring Spirits\, and close out the afternoon with a lecture presented by Museum Educator\, Ms. Emily Doherty\, on the military operation that transpired in Western Pennsylvania at 3:00 p.m. Each lecture is 45mins\, tasting session is one hour. Both lectures are free\, as is the tasting session. \nUpon arrival guests can enjoy a “Welcome Cocktail” provided free of charge\, by Big Spring Spirits of Bellefonte\, PA. \n\n\nRye Old Fashioned… a Rye aged six years\, Orange\, Lemon\, Cherry\, and Sugar. \n\n\nBetween the lectures\, Big Spring Spirits will host a spirit tasting session for event attendees featuring (6yr) Rye\, Wheat\, Corn\, and American (bourbon) whiskies. This will be an educational experience unlike any other – tasting each grain separately\, and then finally\, blended in the bourbon style (American Whiskey). All and more will be available for purchase. \nA commemorative\, specially labeled bottle of Rye Whiskey will be available for purchase to benefit the Friends of Pennsylvania Military Museum – additional details will be forthcoming\, check back soon! \nPre-registration to attend the event is required for each individual attendee\, registration is free. DESCRIPTION:Join us at The Yocum Library at Reading Area Community College on June 22\, 2022 at 7:00pm for a presentation to commemorate the anniversary of Hurricane Agnes\, which impacted Berks County 50 years ago.\n\n\nRetired Reading Fire Chief William Rehr\, a volunteer firefighter who assisted in many serious calls during the 1972 natural disaster\, will present and illustrate his talk with a number of astonishing photos.\n\n\n\nBerks County Historian George M. Meiser IX will provide a historical context for Hurricane Agnes by highlighting other major flood events in the past two centuries\, including some photos from a devastating 1869 flood.\n\n\nFollowing the presentations\, attendees will be asked to share their memories of Hurricane Agnes.\n\n\nThe program is a collaboration between the Berks History Center and the Reading Area Firefighters Museum and host\, Reading Area Community College.\n\n\n\nThe program is free but seating is very limited. DESCRIPTION:Discover Hidden Barn Treasures in Historic Oley Valley! \nDuring this enriching program\, Greg Huber (the Sherlock Holmes of Pennsylvania barns)\, will share his wealth of knowledge about various Oley Valley barns\, their construction\, builders\, and mysterious etchings. Part VI includes barns that have not been featured on previous tours. \nSimilar to our Fall 2021 tour\, no lunch or bus transportation will be provided. Due to COVID related restrictions\, this tour is a guided driving tour. Carpooling is encouraged. Registration is limited to the first 12 vehicles that sign up. \nParticipants must have the ability to get in and out of their vehicle repeatedly\, climb steps and walk short distances. \nThe price of the trip is $35/BHC member and $45/non-member. SUMMARY:Second Saturday Program- Before He Was a Catcher or a Spy: Moe Berg’s Year with the 1925 Reading Keys
DESCRIPTION:BHC trustee and baseball historian\, Brian Engelhardt\, presents a program about Moe Berg\, who played shortstop for the Reading Keys before a 15 year major league career as a catcher. Fluent in 10 languages\, Berg graduated magna cum laude from Princeton with a degree in modern languages. Following his retirement from baseball\, during WWII\, he engaged in espionage activity for the Office of Secret Service\, predecessor of the Central Intelligence Agency. Berg’s career in baseball and thereafter as a spy will be covered in the presentation.   \nFollowing the program\, starting at 11:30 AM\, is a free showing of the movie\, The Catcher Was a Spy (starring Paul Rudd and Jeff Daniels).  \nIn addition\, the week following the presentation there will be a guided tour of FirstEnergy Stadium with Brian and Charlie Adams as the guides. It is free for all who attend the program and $5 for people who did not attend the program. \nThis program will be held in person\, inside the BHC Museum Auditorium. DESCRIPTION:At the end of the Civil War\, Pennsylvania had more orphaned children than most states. Carl Bloss\, Archivist Emeritus of Bethany’s Children’s Home\, who previously lectured at the BHC about the Soldier’s Orphans Schools Program (SOS)\, will speak about the early orphanages of Reading and Berks County from 1729 to 1850\, when many orphanages were active. SUMMARY:Second Saturday Program- Back From Battle: The Forgotten Story of Pennsylvania’s Camp Discharge and Weary Civil War Soldiers It Served
DESCRIPTION:Co-authors Jim Remsen and Brad Upp draw from military and medical records\, pension files\, dairies\, memoirs\, newspapers\, and more to present a rich account of Camp Discharge and the men it housed and helped. Eighty-nine Pennsylvania regiments had men at Camp Discharge\, and nine of those regiments recruited in Berks County: the 32nd\, 36th\, 88th\, 107th and 198th Infantries; 2nd and 3rd Cavalries; and 3rd and Durell Artilleries. \nThis presentation will include photographs and accounts of individual soldiers\, as well as a display of artifacts that were unearthed at the site of Camp Discharge. In addition\, copies of their book\, “Back From Battle” will be available for purchase. \nThis program will be held in person\, inside the BHC Museum Auditorium.
