DESCRIPTION:Join journalist and author\, Jim Remsen as he chronicles the experiences of a group of fugitive slaves who escaped southern bondage\, dared to openly build new lives in Pennsylvania\, and later returned south to fight for the Union.\nJournalist and author Jim Remsen will present an illustrated history talk\, “Freedom-Seekers Turned Freedom-Fighters\,” which chronicles the experiences of a group of fugitive slaves who escaped southern bondage and dared to openly build new lives in the North. Once the Civil War came\, these men and their sons left their safe haven in Pennsylvania and returned south\, into the bowels of slavery\, to fight for the Union. Their valor under fire helped to change many minds about black people. Remsen’s nonfiction history book\, Embattled Freedom: Chronicle of a Fugitive-Slave Haven in the Wary North\, lifts these thirteen remarkable lives out of the shadows\, while also shedding light on the racial politics and social codes they and their people endured in the divided North before\, during and after the war. \nThe fugitives’ safe haven was little Waverly\, Pa.\, Remsen’s boyhood hometown near Scranton. Now a Bala Cynwyd resident\, and a retired editor and reporter at The Philadelphia Inquirer\, he spent several years researching this story as a way to bring some overdue tribute to Waverly’s unsung “colored troops” and the white abolitionists who stood by them. Embattled Freedom (Sunbury Press\, 2017) has been praised by the director of Scranton’s Lackawanna Historical Society\, Mary Ann Savakinus\, as “a fascinating history that needs to be shared.” Mark Bowden\, New York Times bestselling author of Black Hawk Down\, Killing Pablo and his latest\, Hue 1968\, calls it “a fine example of serious local history\, which fleshes out in particulars the larger social issues over a century.” For more\, visit embattledfreedom.org \nSnow Date: February 15 \nNo Tickets Required. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the Holidays with Historic Tours Full of Cheer with One Mansion\, One Stable Museum & One Horse Race Track.\nBelair Mansion offers a look at Maryland’s earliest history. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places\, it was built in 1745 for Provincial Governor Samuel Ogle and his wife Anne. Ogle\, along with his brother-in-law\, Colonel Benjamin Tasker\, imported a number of Thoroughbred horses in the hopes of introducing English stock to the colonies to strengthen local race horses. They succeeded. Their mare\, Selima\, still lives in history and n the bloodlines of many of today’s famous racehorses. \nBelair later became the home of William Woodward\, noted American horseman of the 20th century. “Belair Stud Stables” became one of the country’s premier stables from the 1920’s through the 1950’s. Today’s Stable Museum highlights the accomplishments of Belair’s bloodstock over its 200-year racing legacy. It also features a restored 1923 Stablemaster’s living quarters. \nNext\, we’re off to the races! Laurel Park is one of Maryland’s premier destinations for horse racing and has been offering exciting Thoroughbred horse racing since 1911. Upon arrival we will enjoy a boxed lunch of either Roast Beef with Honey Mustard\, Brie and Watercress on a Ciabatta Roll\, Smoked Turkey with Cranberry Mayonnaise\, Lettuce\, Tomato and Cheddar Cheese on Brioche Bread or Grilled Chicken with Parmesan Cheese\, Lettuce and Tomato in a Whole Wheat Wrap. The rustic scenery\, culture\, and folkloric traditions of Albany Township and Berks County will be brought to life with Jon describing paintings and Dave playing his songs and tunes.  Several music videos will also be part of the evening’s show. Jon and Dave worked on the project over a 10 month period to create 75 pieces of art and 24 pieces of music. DESCRIPTION:Winemaking in Reading goes back almost to the earliest days of European settlement in the area\, beginning in the early 1800s. These wines\, first known as “Reading Red\,” and later associated with the slopes of our nearby mountains\, were highly regarded at the time. The Philadelphia Times once wrote\, for example\, that “some of the best native wine in this country is made from grapes grown right on the side of Mount Penn\, within fifty miles of Philadelphia.”\nTo celebrate the launch of his book\, Lost Mount Penn: Wineries\, Railroads and Resorts of Reading\, author Mike Madaio will be joining us for a special event and wine tasting. After sharing some of the fascinating history of wine in our area–including the colorful characters that made it\, and the events that led to its downfall–Mike will lead us through a tasting of high-quality local wines\, all grown and made within 50 miles of Reading. SUMMARY:The Human Side of War: German POW's at the Reading Airbase
DESCRIPTION:Discover the compassionate relationships that developed between German POW’s and a Civilian Contractor during WWII when the Reading Airbase maintained a camp for German prisoners of war\, who served as workers at the airbase and on the farms around Berks County. Presented by Keith Heberling and Roger Rank.\nFrom September\, 1944 to February\, 1946\, the Reading Airbase maintained a camp for German prisoners of war\, who served as workers at the airbase and on the farms around Berks County. Several of the POW’s were assigned to the Paint Shop which was operated by a civilian contractor\, Roy Rank. The working relationship was one of mutual respect which soon developed into close friendships\, one friendship lasting a lifetime. After the Germans left Reading\, the correspondence with Rank continued and their letters\, some very emotional\, describe the uncertainty of the former prisoners as to when and if they would be allowed to go home\, but then\, the utter destruction they found in their home cities and the difficulty in merely surviving in a war-devastated country. However\, in every letter they expressed gratitude for the kind treatment they received while here in Reading and for the continuing letters and frequent “care” packages that they received from their Friend in America. \nThis month’s history presentation will be followed by a special one-time exhibition of a local veteran’s “Combat Paper\,” a special project that involves printing vetertan service photos on paper made from soldier uniforms. \nNo Tickets Required. DESCRIPTION:Party Like It’s 1776 in Historic Philadelphia\nTravel to Philadelphia’s Independence Square\, Carpenters’ Hall\, Museum of the American Revolution with lunch at City Tavern. \nWhen was the last time you visited Philadelphia’s Independence Square? This history-packed day starts with a guided tour of Independence Hall where we will walk in the shoes of Thomas Jefferson and others as they debated and adopted the United States Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution. Our timed entry guarantees that we’ll avoid the crowds. Afterwards we’ll have a chance to visit the Liberty Bell\, broken but beautiful\, it is one of America’s icons of freedom. \nCarpenter’s Hall\, built in 1724\, is one of Philadelphia’s hidden gems. It showcases the Master Builder’s who constructed most of colonial Philadelphia. After our guided tour we’ll hop across the cobbled stone street to the historic City Tavern and enjoy Chef Staib’s culinary genius with a choice of Fillet of Salmon or Colonial Pot Pie. \nOur tour at the Museum of the American Revolution begins at 2 PM after the school groups depart for the day. Together we’ll explore America from the early stirrings of unrest in Boston to the opening shots of the War for Independence to when the ideas\, events and legacies of revolution formed the democracy of our United States. Showcased in this museum is Washington’s Tent which may or may not have been made in Reading almost 250 years ago. The Museum’s first international loaned exhibit\, Cost of Revolution: The Life and Death of an Irish Soldier\, includes more than 100 works of art\, historical objects\, manuscripts and maps from lenders across the globe. \n$110 Members/$120 Non-Members \nPrice of the trip does not include bus driver tip. SUMMARY:Oley Valley Barn Tour: Part II
DESCRIPTION:Discover Hidden Barn Treasures in Historic Oley Valley with barn and house historian Greg Huber.\nNot only will Greg Huber enlighten us with his wealth of knowledge about barns while traveling throughout the Oley Valley but we will also tour the interior of several of the barns as well. Architectural features\, building methods and materials utilized will explain the transition from European building styles over hundreds of year to that of early North American Barns to Ground\, Sweitzer and Standard Barns that are familiar to all of us.
