This presentation will discuss the legislation in Pennsylvania that guaranteed jury service as a right held by both women and men. It will also explore the problems that arose in the implementation of this right\, beginning with getting women’s names on the jury roll\, plus addressing the monumental problem of the total absence of rest rooms for women in the Berks County Courthouse as it existed at the time. The presentation will generally revisit the difficult path that confronted the women jurors- pioneers in that important facet of Berks County’s judicial system. \nBrian Engelhardt is a native of Reading and is a regular contributor to the Berks County Historical Review on various matters concerning local history\, including local baseball history. A graduate of Dickinson College and the University of Pittsburgh School of Law\, he is a retired attorney who also regularly contributes to the Berks Barrister\, published by the Bar Association. He has written about the problems confronting women jurors in the wake of the 19th Amendment both in the Historical Review as well as the Barrister. He also is the author of the book\, “Reading’s Big League Exhibition Games\,” a great work of western literature. \n  \nAhead of Her Time: Story of a Berks County Code Girl Discovered 75 Years Later Linda Thompson Thomas a.k.a. L.T. James \nMary Jane Painter Thompson was a WWII veteran of the US Office of Strategic Services\, which is now known as the CIA. Uncover her experiences serving for three years as a top secret cryptographer in North Africa and Italy from 1943-45 with a visual journey featuring artifacts that her daughter discovered almost 75 years later in the attic of the family home. After serving her country\, Thompson became involved with the League of Women Voters in her hometown\, Reading\, PA. \nLinda Thompson Thomas aka L.T. James is a Berks County native who has lived\, worked and traveled around the world. Linda graduated as Vice President of her nursing class in California while raising her three children. Linda has been the Coordinator of the Pagoda Writers group since 2010 and continues to serve as a Youth Aid Panel Volunteer with the Juvenile Probation Office for the last ten years. She is also a graduate of RACC and studied Psychology at Albright along with numerous other institutions of learning in the United States and abroad. \nDeeds Not Words: Discovering Our Berks Suffragists Mary Ellen Heckman \nThis program presents the stories of the Berks County women who worked for the woman suffrage movement locally.  Learn how old newspapers and local records were used to reveal their hard work and personal lives. Learn how to use these same techniques to uncover your own ancestors’ lives. \nMary Ellen Heckman is Associate Dean of Library Services at Reading Area Community College. Mrs. Heckman is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Penn State in American Studies and has a master’s in Library Service from Rutgers University. She was a founding member of the Berks County Genealogical Society and has been helping people research their family histories for over thirty years. \nMore Thank Just Mrs.: The Importance of Women in Family History Dr. Karen Guenther \n \n  \nOften people researching their family history focus on male relatives or see female ancestors as appendages to their husbands.  This presentation will discuss how researching the women in your family tree – mothers\, aunts\, grandmothers\, etc. – can help you better understand your family’s heritage. \nDr. Karen Guenther is a native of Berks County and currently is Professor of History at Mansfield University.  She earned a B.A. in History and Spanish at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches\, Texas\, M.A. in History at Penn State\, and Ph.D. in History at the University of Houston.  She focuses on Reading’s and Berks County’s religious history in her research and publications.  Her dissertation on Exeter Monthly Meeting during the 18th century was published by Susquehanna University Press in 2005.  She is currently researching the immigration and naturalization policy of the British Empire and its effect on the settlement of Berks County in the 18th century. \n  \nClick here for a Conference Brochure & Registration Form\nCall 610-375-4375 to register or send your check and registration form to Berks History Center: 940 Centre Ave. Reading\, PA 19601 \n\nOff street parking available at 160 Spring Street\, Reading. \nAll programs subject to change. \nBerks History Center is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission \n

SUMMARY:Freedom-Seekers Turned Freedom-Fighters
DESCRIPTION:Join journalist and author\, Jim Remsen as he chronicles the experiences of a group of fugitive slaves who escaped southern bondage\, dared to openly build new lives in Pennsylvania\, and later returned south to fight for the Union.\nJournalist and author Jim Remsen will present an illustrated history talk\, “Freedom-Seekers Turned Freedom-Fighters\,” which chronicles the experiences of a group of fugitive slaves who escaped southern bondage and dared to openly build new lives in the North. Once the Civil War came\, these men and their sons left their safe haven in Pennsylvania and returned south\, into the bowels of slavery\, to fight for the Union. Their valor under fire helped to change many minds about black people. Remsen’s nonfiction history book\, Embattled Freedom: Chronicle of a Fugitive-Slave Haven in the Wary North\, lifts these thirteen remarkable lives out of the shadows\, while also shedding light on the racial politics and social codes they and their people endured in the divided North before\, during and after the war. \nThe fugitives’ safe haven was little Waverly\, Pa.\, Remsen’s boyhood hometown near Scranton. Now a Bala Cynwyd resident\, and a retired editor and reporter at The Philadelphia Inquirer\, he spent several years researching this story as a way to bring some overdue tribute to Waverly’s unsung “colored troops” and the white abolitionists who stood by them. Embattled Freedom (Sunbury Press\, 2017) has been praised by the director of Scranton’s Lackawanna Historical Society\, Mary Ann Savakinus\, as “a fascinating history that needs to be shared.” Mark Bowden\, New York Times bestselling author of Black Hawk Down\, Killing Pablo and his latest\, Hue 1968\, calls it “a fine example of serious local history\, which fleshes out in particulars the larger social issues over a century.” For more\, visit embattledfreedom.org \nSnow Date: February 15 \nNo Tickets Required. All Second Saturday programs are “pay at the door.” $5.00 members\, $8.00 non-members. Light Refreshments served at 9:30AM. \nOff street parking available at 160 Spring Street\, Reading. \nAll programs subject to change. \nBerks History Center is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission

SUMMARY:Off to the Races!
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the Holidays with Historic Tours Full of Cheer with One Mansion\, One Stable Museum & One Horse Race Track.\nBelair Mansion offers a look at Maryland’s earliest history. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places\, it was built in 1745 for Provincial Governor Samuel Ogle and his wife Anne. Ogle\, along with his brother-in-law\, Colonel Benjamin Tasker\, imported a number of Thoroughbred horses in the hopes of introducing English stock to the colonies to strengthen local race horses. They succeeded. Their mare\, Selima\, still lives in history and n the bloodlines of many of today’s famous racehorses. \nBelair later became the home of William Woodward\, noted American horseman of the 20th century. “Belair Stud Stables” became one of the country’s premier stables from the 1920’s through the 1950’s. Today’s Stable Museum highlights the accomplishments of Belair’s bloodstock over its 200-year racing legacy. It also features a restored 1923 Stablemaster’s living quarters. \nNext\, we’re off to the races! SUMMARY:Reading Red: A Wine Tasting & History Program
DESCRIPTION:Winemaking in Reading goes back almost to the earliest days of European settlement in the area\, beginning in the early 1800s. These wines\, first known as “Reading Red\,” and later associated with the slopes of our nearby mountains\, were highly regarded at the time. The Philadelphia Times once wrote\, for example\, that “some of the best native wine in this country is made from grapes grown right on the side of Mount Penn\, within fifty miles of Philadelphia.”\nTo celebrate the launch of his book\, Lost Mount Penn: Wineries\, Railroads and Resorts of Reading\, author Mike Madaio will be joining us for a special event and wine tasting. After sharing some of the fascinating history of wine in our area–including the colorful characters that made it\, and the events that led to its downfall–Mike will lead us through a tasting of high-quality local wines\, all grown and made within 50 miles of Reading. You don’t want to miss this one of a kind Berks history program! \nMike Madaio’s new book\, Lost Mount Penn: Wineries\, Railroads and Resorts of Reading\, will be available for purchase and signing during this event. \nTickets: $35/person (includes refreshments and a guided tasting of Berks County area wines)\n  \nThe wines will include “a sampling of some of the best dry vinefra (European grape) wines made within 50 miles of the Berks History Center\,” says Wine & Food writer\, Mike Madaio\, “including one semi-sweet red that includes native grapes and tastes somewhat close the common wine of that era.” \n

SUMMARY:The Human Side of War: German POW's at the Reading Airbase
DESCRIPTION:Discover the compassionate relationships that developed between German POW’s and a Civilian Contractor during WWII when the Reading Airbase maintained a camp for German prisoners of war\, who served as workers at the airbase and on the farms around Berks County. Presented by Keith Heberling and Roger Rank.\nFrom September\, 1944 to February\, 1946\, the Reading Airbase maintained a camp for German prisoners of war\, who served as workers at the airbase and on the farms around Berks County. Several of the POW’s were assigned to the Paint Shop which was operated by a civilian contractor\, Roy Rank. The working relationship was one of mutual respect which soon developed into close friendships\, one friendship lasting a lifetime. After the Germans left Reading\, the correspondence with Rank continued and their letters\, some very emotional\, describe the uncertainty of the former prisoners as to when and if they would be allowed to go home\, but then\, the utter destruction they found in their home cities and the difficulty in merely surviving in a war-devastated country. However\, in every letter they expressed gratitude for the kind treatment they received while here in Reading and for the continuing letters and frequent “care” packages that they received from their Friend in America. \nThis month’s history presentation will be followed by a special one-time exhibition of a local veteran’s “Combat Paper\,” a special project that involves printing vetertan service photos on paper made from soldier uniforms. \nNo Tickets Required. All Second Saturday programs are “pay at the door.” $5.00 members\, $8.00 non-members. Light Refreshments served at 9:30AM. \n\nOff street parking available at 160 Spring Street\, Reading. \nAll programs subject to change. \nBerks History Center is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission

SUMMARY:A Day in Historic Philadelphia
DESCRIPTION:Party Like It’s 1776 in Historic Philadelphia\nTravel to Philadelphia’s Independence Square\, Carpenters’ Hall\, Museum of the American Revolution with lunch at City Tavern. \nWhen was the last time you visited Philadelphia’s Independence Square? This history-packed day starts with a guided tour of Independence Hall where we will walk in the shoes of Thomas Jefferson and others as they debated and adopted the United States Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution. Our timed entry guarantees that we’ll avoid the crowds. Afterwards we’ll have a chance to visit the Liberty Bell\, broken but beautiful\, it is one of America’s icons of freedom. \nCarpenter’s Hall\, built in 1724\, is one of Philadelphia’s hidden gems. After our guided tour we’ll hop across the cobbled stone street to the historic City Tavern and enjoy Chef Staib’s culinary genius with a choice of Fillet of Salmon or Colonial Pot Pie. \nOur tour at the Museum of the American Revolution begins at 2 PM after the school groups depart for the day. Together we’ll explore America from the early stirrings of unrest in Boston to the opening shots of the War for Independence to when the ideas\, events and legacies of revolution formed the democracy of our United States. Showcased in this museum is Washington’s Tent which may or may not have been made in Reading almost 250 years ago. The Museum’s first international loaned exhibit\, Cost of Revolution: The Life and Death of an Irish Soldier\, includes more than 100 works of art\, historical objects\, manuscripts and maps from lenders across the globe. \n$110 Members/$120 Non-Members \nPrice of the trip does not include bus driver tip.
