SUMMARY:9/11 Day of Remembrance with Rodney Loose
DESCRIPTION:The terrorist attacks of September 11\, 2001 were the deadliest in our nation’s history. Join us as we commemorate this tragic day on its 20th anniversary with former FBI Agent Rodney Loose\, a native of Berks County and one of the heroic first responders on the scene. Rodney will be sharing his own pictures and experiences\, along with showing a short movie that pays tribute to the NY Police officers and first responders. \nThis program will be held in person\, inside the BHC Museum Auditorium. The cost of this program is $5 for BHC members and $8 for non-members\, and includes admission to the BHC Museum. Fees will be accepted at the door on the day of the event. Coffee\, hot tea\, juice and pre-packaged muffins will be made available for participants at 9:30 AM. \nMasks are required for entry. Please note that seating is limited to the first 40 attendees to facilitate social distancing. Seating is first come\, first serve. \nFor any questions\, please call 610-375-4375. \nA recording of this program will be made available on the BHC YouTube channel at a later date.

SUMMARY:House Blessing Inscriptions: A Pennsylvania Dutch Tradition of Establishment
DESCRIPTION:This presentation\, given by Patrick Donmoyer\, Director of the Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center at Kutztown University\, features a survey of architectural stone inscriptions and date plaques\, with parallels found in written and printed blessings used in the home. A wide range of German-language blessing inscriptions ranging from Berks\, Lebanon\, and Lehigh will be explained\, each with an English-language equivalent\, as well as their biblical and historical significance. The history of these inscriptions is traced through the building and stone-carving trades\, as well as linked to the interrelated traditions of both officially sanctioned church rituals regarding the blessing of buildings as well as folk applications of domestic rituals used in the home. \n  \n\nThis event is free to the public and will take place on Zoom. DESCRIPTION:Did you know that there were Amish in Reading back in the 1700s? Have you ever wondered what happened to them? For answers to your questions\, tune in to this lecture by Nic Stoltzfus\, a descendant of one of the Amish families who lived in Reading in the late 1700s. His lecture will focus on the Stoltzfus family\, their immigration journey from Germany to Pennsylvania\, and their move to Berks County; he will also talk about the Nicholas Stoltzfus Homestead in Wyomissing and how the descendants of Immigrant Nicholas Stoltzfus restored it. \nNic Stoltzfus served as the caretaker of the Nicholas Stoltzfus Homestead from 2018 to 2020. During his time as caretaker\, he published two books about the family: German Lutherans to Pennsylvania Amish: The Stoltzfus Family Story and In the Footsteps of My Stoltzfus Family: A Genealogy Memoir. He is the editorial director at Plain Values magazine and lives in Reading. Austin State University in Nacogdoches\, Texas\, M.A. in History at Penn State\, and a Ph.D. in History at the University of Houston.  She focuses on Reading’s and Berks County’s religious history in her research and publications.  Her dissertation on Exeter Monthly Meeting during the 18th century was published by Susquehanna University Press in 2005.  She is currently researching the immigration and naturalization policy of the British Empire and its effect on the settlement of Berks County in the 18th century.

SUMMARY:CANCELED: Pennsylvania Iron Masters During the Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Due to the extended stay at home orders\, this event has been canceled. We are working to provide digital programming to replace our regularly scheduled Second Saturday programs. This particular speaker has been rescheduled for 2021.\nAt the beginning of the Revolutionary War\, Pennsylvania’s ironworks produced a large percentage of Colonial America’s iron.  The battles of Lexington and Concord were fought in the summer of 1775\, and shortly thereafter Pennsylvania began to take measures for the defense of the state.  The first line of defense was directed toward arming merchant ships already afloat\, with cannon.  While the proposal was good in theory\, there were no cannon with which to arm them.  The solution was provided by Pennsylvania’s ironmasters.  Within a year\, they were producing cannon to arm the American army and navy.  Learn about the trials and tribulations they went through to arm Washington’s army.  It’s a fascinating story and one worth retelling. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNo Tickets Required. DESCRIPTION:Join journalist and author\, Jim Remsen as he chronicles the experiences of a group of fugitive slaves who escaped southern bondage\, dared to openly build new lives in Pennsylvania\, and later returned south to fight for the Union.\nJournalist and author Jim Remsen will present an illustrated history talk\, “Freedom-Seekers Turned Freedom-Fighters\,” which chronicles the experiences of a group of fugitive slaves who escaped southern bondage and dared to openly build new lives in the North. Once the Civil War came\, these men and their sons left their safe haven in Pennsylvania and returned south\, into the bowels of slavery\, to fight for the Union. Their valor under fire helped to change many minds about black people. Remsen’s nonfiction history book\, Embattled Freedom: Chronicle of a Fugitive-Slave Haven in the Wary North\, lifts these thirteen remarkable lives out of the shadows\, while also shedding light on the racial politics and social codes they and their people endured in the divided North before\, during and after the war. \nThe fugitives’ safe haven was little Waverly\, Pa.\, Remsen’s boyhood hometown near Scranton. Now a Bala Cynwyd resident\, and a retired editor and reporter at The Philadelphia Inquirer\, he spent several years researching this story as a way to bring some overdue tribute to Waverly’s unsung “colored troops” and the white abolitionists who stood by them. Embattled Freedom (Sunbury Press\, 2017) has been praised by the director of Scranton’s Lackawanna Historical Society\, Mary Ann Savakinus\, as “a fascinating history that needs to be shared.” Mark Bowden\, New York Times bestselling author of Black Hawk Down\, Killing Pablo and his latest\, Hue 1968\, calls it “a fine example of serious local history\, which fleshes out in particulars the larger social issues over a century.” For more\, visit embattledfreedom.org \nSnow Date: February 15 \nNo Tickets Required. SUMMARY:The Human Side of War: German POW's at the Reading Airbase
DESCRIPTION:Discover the compassionate relationships that developed between German POW’s and a Civilian Contractor during WWII when the Reading Airbase maintained a camp for German prisoners of war\, who served as workers at the airbase and on the farms around Berks County. Presented by Keith Heberling and Roger Rank.\nFrom September\, 1944 to February\, 1946\, the Reading Airbase maintained a camp for German prisoners of war\, who served as workers at the airbase and on the farms around Berks County. Several of the POW’s were assigned to the Paint Shop which was operated by a civilian contractor\, Roy Rank. The working relationship was one of mutual respect which soon developed into close friendships\, one friendship lasting a lifetime. After the Germans left Reading\, the correspondence with Rank continued and their letters\, some very emotional\, describe the uncertainty of the former prisoners as to when and if they would be allowed to go home\, but then\, the utter destruction they found in their home cities and the difficulty in merely surviving in a war-devastated country. However\, in every letter they expressed gratitude for the kind treatment they received while here in Reading and for the continuing letters and frequent “care” packages that they received from their Friend in America. \nThis month’s history presentation will be followed by a special one-time exhibition of a local veteran’s “Combat Paper\,” a special project that involves printing vetertan service photos on paper made from soldier uniforms. \nNo Tickets Required.
