SUMMARY:Pennsylvania Ironmasters during the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:At the beginning of the Revolutionary War\, Pennsylvania’s ironworks produced a large percentage of Colonial America’s iron.  The battles of Lexington and Concord were fought in the summer of 1775\, and shortly thereafter\, Pennsylvania began to take measures for the defense of the state.  This included raising a militia\, fortifying Philadelphia\, and manufacturing gunpowder and arms.   \nDuring this May Second Saturday program\, iron historian Dan Graham will discuss the vital role of Pennsylvania’s iron industry in colonial America and the key role ironmaster’s played in the success of the Revolution. \nThis program will be held in person\, inside the BHC Museum Auditorium. SUMMARY:Second Saturday Program- Before He Was a Catcher or a Spy: Moe Berg’s Year with the 1925 Reading Keys
DESCRIPTION:BHC trustee and baseball historian\, Brian Engelhardt\, presents a program about Moe Berg\, who played shortstop for the Reading Keys before a 15 year major league career as a catcher. Fluent in 10 languages\, Berg graduated magna cum laude from Princeton with a degree in modern languages. Following his retirement from baseball\, during WWII\, he engaged in espionage activity for the Office of Secret Service\, predecessor of the Central Intelligence Agency. Berg’s career in baseball and thereafter as a spy will be covered in the presentation.   \nFollowing the program\, starting at 11:30 AM\, is a free showing of the movie\, The Catcher Was a Spy (starring Paul Rudd and Jeff Daniels).  \nIn addition\, the week following the presentation there will be a guided tour of FirstEnergy Stadium with Brian and Charlie Adams as the guides. DESCRIPTION:At the end of the Civil War\, Pennsylvania had more orphaned children than most states. Carl Bloss\, Archivist Emeritus of Bethany’s Children’s Home\, who previously lectured at the BHC about the Soldier’s Orphans Schools Program (SOS)\, will speak about the early orphanages of Reading and Berks County from 1729 to 1850\, when many orphanages were active. Mr. Bloss will trace the growth and demise of the orphanage system from a Berks County viewpoint. \nThis program will be held in person\, inside the BHC Museum Auditorium. The cost of this program is $5 for BHC members and $8 for non-members. The program fee includes admission to the BHC Museum. Fees will be accepted at the door on the day of the event. SUMMARY:Second Saturday Program- Back From Battle: The Forgotten Story of Pennsylvania’s Camp Discharge and Weary Civil War Soldiers It Served
DESCRIPTION:Co-authors Jim Remsen and Brad Upp draw from military and medical records\, pension files\, dairies\, memoirs\, newspapers\, and more to present a rich account of Camp Discharge and the men it housed and helped. Eighty-nine Pennsylvania regiments had men at Camp Discharge\, and nine of those regiments recruited in Berks County: the 32nd\, 36th\, 88th\, 107th and 198th Infantries; 2nd and 3rd Cavalries; and 3rd and Durell Artilleries. \nThis presentation will include photographs and accounts of individual soldiers\, as well as a display of artifacts that were unearthed at the site of Camp Discharge. In addition\, copies of their book\, “Back From Battle” will be available for purchase. \nThis program will be held in person\, inside the BHC Museum Auditorium. SUMMARY:House Blessing Inscriptions: A Pennsylvania Dutch Tradition of Establishment
DESCRIPTION:This presentation\, given by Patrick Donmoyer\, Director of the Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center at Kutztown University\, features a survey of architectural stone inscriptions and date plaques\, with parallels found in written and printed blessings used in the home. A wide range of German-language blessing inscriptions ranging from Berks\, Lebanon\, and Lehigh will be explained\, each with an English-language equivalent\, as well as their biblical and historical significance. DESCRIPTION:Did you know that there were Amish in Reading back in the 1700s? Have you ever wondered what happened to them? For answers to your questions\, tune in to this lecture by Nic Stoltzfus\, a descendant of one of the Amish families who lived in Reading in the late 1700s. His lecture will focus on the Stoltzfus family\, their immigration journey from Germany to Pennsylvania\, and their move to Berks County; he will also talk about the Nicholas Stoltzfus Homestead in Wyomissing and how the descendants of Immigrant Nicholas Stoltzfus restored it. \nNic Stoltzfus served as the caretaker of the Nicholas Stoltzfus Homestead from 2018 to 2020. During his time as caretaker\, he published two books about the family: German Lutherans to Pennsylvania Amish: The Stoltzfus Family Story and In the Footsteps of My Stoltzfus Family: A Genealogy Memoir. He is the editorial director at Plain Values magazine and lives in Reading. Austin State University in Nacogdoches\, Texas\, M.A. in History at Penn State\, and a Ph.D. in History at the University of Houston.  She focuses on Reading’s and Berks County’s religious history in her research and publications.  Her dissertation on Exeter Monthly Meeting during the 18th century was published by Susquehanna University Press in 2005.  She is currently researching the immigration and naturalization policy of the British Empire and its effect on the settlement of Berks County in the 18th century.
